Harakeke

I will be working with my students to restore the mana and hauora of the harakeke at our school.
Here is a link to the Christchurch City Library Website where I sourced the whakatauki and karakia from as well as explanations around the importance and care of harakeke.

Whakataukī / Proverb

E hara taku toa, i te toa takitahi ēngari he toa taku tini
My strength is not from myself alone, but from the strength of the group
Hutia te rito
o te harakeke
Kei whea, te kōmako e kō?
Kī mai ki ahau
He aha te mea nui
o tēnei ao
Māku e kī atu
He tangata, he tangata, he tangata.
When the heart is torn
from the flax bush
where will the Bell bird sing?
You ask me
what is the greatest thing
on Earth
My reply is
it is people people people.

Karakia for Harvesting Harakeke

Te harakeke
Te korari
Ngā Taonga whakarere iho
O te rangi
O te whenua
O ngā tupuna
Homai he oranga mo mātou
Tihei Mauri Ora!

Flax
The treasure passed down to us
By the sky, the land, the ancestors
Give us wellness for our life force

We are in the process of transforming our classroom.  We are observing other classrooms over the internet to guide us.  We have enhanced our morning mihimihi (Classroom Paepae) thanks to watching this awesome video from Te Whakatupuranga.
